The Frost Art Museum Presents Breakfast in the Park
Breakfast in the Park
Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 9:30 – noon
November 23, 2011, Miami, FL– Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum hosts an official Art Basel sponsored event, Breakfast in the Park, drawing in hundreds of art enthusiast yearly. The 8th annual Breakfast in the Park features internally renowned artist Joel Perlman. Perlman has been creating complex sculptures out of steel, bronze, copper, and aluminum since the early 1970’s. He builds sculptural pieces by welding metal in stacks or perilous joints. There are no preliminary drawings, for Perlman sees his work as evidence of a process, and the result of an activity. Breakfast in the Park will take place on December 4, 2011 from 9:30am to noon at
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU located at 10975 sw 17th st, Miami, FL 33199.
Joel Perlman sees sculpting as an adventure and each work as the record and result of an exploration of weight, danger, negative space and monumentality. While minimalism was the predominant style of his generation, Perlman chose to push his forms into ever-more complicated configurations. The angular and circular elements of his raw metal forms are welded or cast into complicated, gravity defying arrangements. His works are also known for the central, open space. These negative spaces help define the work and are as important to Perlman as the sculpture itself. His process is one that is tied closely to the materials and to the construction and deconstruction that take place during the creation of his sculpture. Joel Perlman has been an instructor at School of Visual Arts in New York since 1973.
