OXENBERG FINE ART will be hosting a grand opening reception for the artist on Thursday, April 17th from 7 PM to 10 PM. The artist will be in attendance.
My passion for the Early Renaissance relates to the artists’ uses of profiles to depict these ladies in what they considered a modest and befitting pose; and the fact that these portraits were usually kept wrapped in fabric, and put away only to be viewed by a selective audience. When I work on the Early Italian Renaissance women, it is all about their serene demeanor. I refrain from the use of texture, and they are done as monochromatic drawings using only Indian Ink and a splash of Cuban coffee for color. The coffee is usually used as a symbolic veil that covers the lady, like the cloth on which these portraits were wrapped during the 1400s. In the case of the Spanish Baroque ladies, their cage-like costumes, so befitting of the roles of women during this time, provoke me. In those paintings I tend to exaggerate their attire and cage-like effect of both their hair and dresses and often get carried away with their stories. I use tremendous amounts of texture and color to execute these paintings.
