Miami, FL — Following its international nomination as the Oscars’ best foreign-language film, Miami Dade College’s acclaimed Tower Theater is thrilled to open a week-long commercial run of, Mustang, on Friday, Jan. 15. The Turkish language film will run with English subtitles and a special screening will be held on opening night in collaboration with Human Rights Watch where its executive director of women’s rights, Liesl Gerntholtz, will discuss the themes of forced and child marriage and the status of women’s rights around the world immediately following the film.

Additionally, three other films with an association to the Tower Theater were nominated for Oscars this year: Brooklyn, the film that opened Miami International Film Festival’s GEMS at the Tower Theater, The Big Short, and 45 Years will open on Friday, Jan. 22, with exclusive Spanish subtitles at the Tower Theater.

Mustang is a coming-of-age drama telling the story of five sisters in a remote seaside village in Turkey who are imprisoned by their family as they near womanhood after a day of innocent fun is misconstrued as “scandalous behavior.” The Turkish sisters’ basic freedoms are stripped from them as they become women, and as the eldest sisters are married off the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. Turkish-born director, Deniz Gamze Ergüven, paints a powerful portrait of female empowerment as the sisters show individual acts of heroism and courage.

“The story of the ‘Mustang’ girls is incredibly emotional and moving as it sheds light on the issues of women’s rights as well as forced and child marriage,” says Orlando Rojas, of Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater. “We are delighted to be collaborating with Human Rights Watch to bring this Oscar nominated film to South Florida and look forward to the discussions it will engender.”
